Overview

We’ve been informed that, starting December 2024, all non-VoLTE (Voice over LTE) devices will be blocked across all Australian mobile networks. This includes restrictions on making emergency calls (000). If you currently use a non-VoLTE device, it's essential to understand these changes to ensure uninterrupted service and access to emergency support.

What Is VoLTE?

VoLTE is a technology that allows voice calls to be made over 4G networks. As Australia’s networks phase out older technologies like 3G, devices that rely on non-VoLTE connections will no longer function for voice calls, including emergency calls.

How Does This Impact You?

  • Non-VoLTE Devices: After December 2024, these devices will not be able to make or receive calls, send SMS, or access emergency services.

  • VoLTE-Compatible Devices: These devices will continue to operate as normal on 4G and 5G networks.

Actions You Should Take

  1. Check Your Device Compatibility:
Use the Check My Device tool from the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA) to verify if your device is VoLTE-compatible.

  2. Upgrade Your Device (if needed):

    • If your device is not VoLTE-compatible, consider upgrading to a VoLTE-supported phone before December 2024.

    • Contact your mobile carrier for advice on VoLTE devices and plans.

  3. Prepare for Emergencies:
Ensure your device can access emergency services (000) post-December 2024. This may involve transitioning to a VoLTE-compatible handset.

Why Is This Happening?

The transition is part of Australia’s efforts to modernise telecommunications infrastructure, phasing out older 3G networks and ensuring reliable connectivity through newer technologies like 4G and 5G.

By upgrading to a VoLTE-compatible device, you’ll enjoy better call quality, faster connection times, and continued access to essential services.
